Application / Acceptance into the Athletic Training Education Program
The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at the University of Indianapolis is highly competitive with application into the ATEP in December of each year. Each applicant MUST meet the following criteria before making application. Completion of all criteria Does Not equate with automatic acceptance however.
- The student applicant must achieve and hold a 2.5 accumulative GPA at the time of application.
- The student applicant must achieve a B- or better in all of the ATEP courses at the University of Indianapolis . (The applicant may achieve a C or better in B in BIOL 103). Failure to achieve a B- or C in BIOL 103 will disqualify the student from making application into the ATEP.
- The student applicant must be in the process of taking (or have successfully completed) ATRG-100, 101, KINS 250 and BIOL 103 for admittance into the ATEP.
- The student applicant must accumulate 80 clinical observation hours in the University of Indianapolis athletic training room before making application to the ATEP.
- The student applicant must complete all applicant competencies before making application into the ATEP. These competencies consist of taping techniques and the proper application of thermotherapy and cryotherapy.
- The student applicant must attend all weekly applicant seminars and before making application into the ATEP.
- The student applicant must follow all protocols, guidelines, and rules of the athletic training room as set by the Head Athletic Trainer and Chair of the Department of Athletic Training.
- The student applicant must comply with all standards of conduct set by the University of Indianapolis for the general student population.
- The student applicant must embody the characteristics of initiative, responsibility, dependability, pride, and loyalty to the program/staff, time management skills, promptness, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. These characteristics will be observed and emphasized during the student’s first semester (applicant phase) and throughout their career as an Athletic Training Student. Each applicant will be evaluated by faculty, staff ATC’s and upper class ATS’s throughout the semester.
- The student applicant must be willing to dedicate appropriate time to clinical experiences in the athletic training room, or other clinical rotations approved by the Chair of the Athletic Training Department, for 6 full semesters.
- Each applicant will be interviewed by certified faculty members, staff and a student representative during the application process.
- The student applicant will make application in December and have the intent of becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Acceptance into the Athletic Training Education Program will depend upon:
- Successfully achieving a GPA of 2.5 and successfully receiving a grade of B- or better in ATRG 100, 101, KINS 250 and BIOL 103.(acceptable grade of C)
- Successful accumulation of clinical observation hours.
- Successful completion of applicant competencies.
- Positive interview with certified faculty/staff, student representative.
- Positive evaluations by faculty/staff ATC’s and athletic training students.
If a student is not accepted into the ATEP they may re-apply the first semester of the following year.
Students transferring to the University of Indianapolis from another athletic training education program and are interested in entering the ATEP must first declare this in writing to the Chair of the Department of Athletic Training.
The Chair of the Department of Athletic Training and ATEP Faculty reserve the right to deny acceptance to any student or dismiss an athletic training student at any time for failure to comply with the above standards.
The student must meet the following requirements to be admitted into the major as a transfer sophomore.
- The transfer student must complete the application process to be admitted into the ATEP. The sophomore level will be the most advanced level they will be accepted.
- Submit letters of recommendation from the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of the Athletic Training Education Program of the university/college from where they are transferring.
- Documentation of the clinical experiences the student has had at the program from where they are transferring. This documentation must include
- all clinical competencies/proficiencies successfully completed,
- the number of clinical hours accrued and or number of clinical semesters. All clinical hours/semesters must meet CAATE guidelines.
- a list of sport/team exposures the student has had from the university/college where they are transferring.
- A copy of transcripts.
- Successfully complete the following requirements
- A practical examination with a grade of 80% or better.
- A written examination with a grade of 80% of better.
- Meet with the Chair of the Department of Athletic Training and ATEP faculty prior to transferring.
- The transferring student must be willing to spend 6 semesters (3 years) at the University of Indianapolis in the ATEP fulfilling the academic requirements and clinical rotations required for graduation. The six semesters will be in addition to the time they have spent at the institution from where they are transferring.
- Transferring students who do not meet the above outlined criteria for entering the program as a Transfer Sophomore must complete the application process as previously described.
