The Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Indianapolis combines a core of academically challenging courses along with required clinical experiences.
Once a student has been accepted into the ATEP they will enroll in didactic classes (see ATEP Coursework) and follow a clinical progression model that will aid in understanding the daily demands of a certified athletic trainer.
Many psychomotor competencies will be successfully completed in the Clinical Experiences in Athletic Training courses. Each student will be assigned to a certified athletic trainer who will serve as the Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) for that clinical rotation. Each semester the student will complete competencies from the following list of areas specific to the knowledge needed to become a successful entry-level athletic trainer.
*Throughout the clinical progression the Athletic Training Student (ATS) will be required to attend an off-campus clinical experience. The ATS will be expected to provide their own transportation. There will be NO reimbursement for mileage.
The clinical education plan at the University of Indianapolis consists of 3 semesters of skill acquisition and 4 semesters of skill integration. As freshman and sophomore level students, the Athletic Training Student (ATS) is learning skills at a rapid rate. Students are instructed in clinical skills in formal didactic, lab, or clinical courses. Students have the opportunity to practice clinical skills in lab, clinical courses and during their clinical assignments. The clinical skill sequence follows the didactic and laboratory course sequence as indicated in the curriculum progression. During the students’ junior and senior years, they are expected to begin integrating clinical skills, competencies and proficiencies in clinical courses and during their clinical assignments. Students do not perform skills that have not been instructed or evaluated by an ACI. ATEP clinical courses address competencies and proficiencies instructed and evaluated in the previous semester.
